Generating Visuals with Audio

Draw Me the Beat is a drawing application built in Processing. The seemingly random brush stroke is determined by the sound of the music. It connects audio with visual to create your own generative art.

Glitch Art Inspiration

Glitch Art Inspiration

I am fascinated with computer generated visuals or ‘Glitch Art’. I love the idea of limiting the users control of the situation (in this case visual art) to create something new and often times more interesting outcomes. By utilizing the Minim Audio Library, I programmed various brush shapes that would change based on the music playing. Each song has a different brush stroke and shape behaviour.

Colour Choice

Colour Choice

The colours of the brush strokes have a random, but limited, colour cycle of blues and purples so no matter how the user ‘makes a mess’ (so to speak) there is always a cohesion with the composition.

Onboarding

The start screen gives the user clear, concise instructions of what to do and what is about to happen. The blue grid background and illustrative style of the arrows is meant to give the appearance that this application is like a notebook ready to be doodled in. Listen. Draw. Enjoy.

The technical stuff

The technical stuff

Left: The UML Diagram visually displays how the program operates with the various classes and subclasses used. The brush size is dependent on the sound of the song. Right: Just a (very) small selection of the code written in Procssing.

Testing and Prototyping

Testing and Prototyping

Above and below: Sometimes the bugs, which would create on their own without user input, were beautiful. True algorithmic art.
